The detection of Borrelia burgdorferi DNA is based upon the DNA amplification of a specific gene sequence by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Note: Diagnosis of Lyme disease should not be based only on the result of this PCR assay. Patients should be evaluated with other approved procedures such as ELISA and/or Western blot. Clinical symptoms based on the CDC criteria remain the best criteria for diagnosis of Lyme disease.
