For testing performed at GCMC: Use serum separator tube (gold-top) or plain red-top tube (non-serum separator). Plasma separator tubes not acceptable.
What to submit:
2 mL aliquot of serum or plasma; minimum 0.2 mL.
Patient preparation:
Collect just prior to next dose.
Specimen Processing Instructions:
Allow serum to clot. Centrifuge serum or plasma at 1100-2000 g for a minimum of 10 minutes. 
Transport temperature:
Refrigerated (preferred) or frozen.
Specimen stability:
Refrigerated: 1 week. Frozen: 60 days.
Rejection criteria:
Stability limits exceeded.
Reference range:
Therapeutic range: 10-20 mcg/mL.
Alert limits:
Above 21.0 mcg/mL.
Additional information:
Significant interference with this procedure may occur in patients with antibodies induced during treatment with mouse monoclonal antibodies.

Clinical Significance:
Theophylline is used in the treatment of bronchial asthma as well as the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and episodes of prolonged apnea in preterm infants. Theophylline levels are monitored to assure adequate therapeutic levels are achieved and to avoid toxicity.
